HOW TO USE

Spectral processing

Spectral processing is a method of decomposing and manipulating audio by frequency.This is achieved by using a phase vocoder to analyze the incoming signal, converting the result to the frequency domain, manipulating it, and converting it back to the time domain. Aurora has taken this technique into reverb-like effects, allowing unique musical tasks such as time stretch, frequency blurring, and harmonization to be controlled directly with knobs and CVs.

The most common way to create a phase vocoder for an audio application isFast Fourier Transformation (FFT)is. In FFT, the time (Time) and pitch (Pitch) of a single input signal are handled separately, so it is possible to change the pitch information without affecting the time element and vice versa. increase. Audio processing with the FFT has trade-offs between time or frequency resolutions.This can be controlled by the'FFT Size'parameter (Shift + Reverse), which is the number of samples per analysis / resynthesis phase. A more accurate frequency response can be obtained by increasing the FFT Size value, and a more accurate transient response can be obtained by setting a smaller value.

Shift Functions

By operating Reverse, Freeze, Mix while holding down the Shift button, Aurora has the followingSecondary functionYou can adjust the parameters. 

  • Shift + Mix --Input Level: Hold down Shift and operate the Mix knob to adjust the audio input level.You can adjust the sound source to be used to the optimum level for Aurora's internal configuration.
  • Shift + Freeze --Reload USB Files: When this unit detects a change on the USB drive, it automatically updates its own configurable settings.Firmware updates are only performed at boot time.This allows you to replace the USB drive and change the configurable settings without power cycling the module.
  • Shift + Reverse --FFT Size: You can switch between the four available FFT settings by holding down Shift and clicking the Reverse button repeatedly. The size of the FFT affects the timbre of acoustic characteristics, latency, and spectral effects.At the highest settings, you can get a fresh spectral modulation of clean pitch shifting in exchange for some additional latency.At the lowest settings, the latency is negligible and you can get a different dimension of timbre in the low resolution spectral field.Apply different sizing settings to the same sound to create a great variety of outputs, and different sounds to complement the FFT size in a unique way.The FFT size settings are also saved during the power cycle.

  • Shift + Reverse, Hold 2sec --Factory Reset: Hold down the Shift button and press and hold the Reverse button for 2 seconds to reset Aurora to factory defaults. The FFT size is set to 4096, Reverse is disabled, the input level is set to XNUMXx, and each function is restored to the default setting.It also resets all "options.txt" parameters to non-destructive defaults. Settings from a USB drive can be reloaded using the Reload USB feature.

Configurable settings

Configurable settings are available via the "options.txt'" file in the USB drive.If the option is set to "1", it is valid, and if it is set to "0", the option is disabled.

To take advantage of the configurable options, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Aurora USB drive into your computer.
  2. Open the options.txt file in your USB drive.
  3. Change the number adjacent to the setting to 1 or 0 and set it to any configuration.
  4. Save the options.txt file.
  5. Safely remove the USB drive and remove it from your computer.
  6. Insert the USB drive into Aurora.
  7. Aurora reads and updates the settings defined in the options.txt file. The LED at the top of the USB port turns white to indicate a successful update.
