MUSICAL FEATURES

Rnd Step is a random / sample and hold module with 6 independent noise sources that Divkid has teamed up with Steady State Fate.

Each channel has two pink noise sources. These noises are sampled at the timing of the trigger and held until the next trigger to output two staircase random signals. The two outputs have different characteristics:

  • Bipolar output: Random output with a range of -5V to 5V. Near 0V, the distribution is uniform and the probability of large voltage appearing is gradually attenuated.
  • Unipolar output: Since the negative voltage sticks to 0, about half of the output is 0V, and above that is random with a distribution similar to Bipolar. This is useful when you want the random voltage even if it is not output.

Unipolar and Bipolar share trigger timing, but the noise sampled is different, resulting in uncorrelated, independent , and random movements. When patched to the Sample input (range -10V to 10V), the patched signal is sampled instead of the pink noise intended for Bipolar.

The device features three independent sample-and-hold-noise circuits that operate as described above. However, since Trigger 1 is internally wired to the other trigger inputs , it is possible to activate all six sample-and-hold circuits with a single trigger.

In analog sample and hold circuits, there is always a voltage drop over sampling and over time, but this module minimizes those voltage drops.
