MUSICAL FEATURES

Mojave is a live granular processor that creates spectacular soundscapes from micro-level audio fragments.

At the core of Mojave's sound design palette is a unique set of controls that allow for flexible grain expression in a compositional context.Simply turn a knob to generate clock-synced granular arpeggios or wrap your sound in a rich swirl of harmonics. All micro sound settings are easily accessible via individual knobs, making it easy to fine-tune each grain and build dunes of sound. Mojave is not a modular signal-only processor. You can also select and control acoustic audio using the front-mounted microphone.

Also, like Nautilus, Mojave's internal settings can be configured via a USB drive and the Narwhal web app.

  • Live Granular Processor/Stochastic Event Generator
  • Equipped with high quality MEMS microphone
  • Configurable Dune CV/Gate output
  • Update firmware via USB drive/use alternative firmware
  • Adopts Daisy platform

HOW TO USE

LED UI

A front panel LED user interface provides visual confirmation of the module's various settings.Desert Wind shows grain amount, size, play speed, zone position, and Sky Mode. The dune LEDs display the Lock and Freeze status, Rate position, Zone and Speed position, etc.

3 grain generation modes

  • Erode (Default):
    LED Color: Blue
In this mode, Mojave generates grains on every clock pulse and also from the Gen button and gate inputs.
  • Shear:
    LED Color: Green
Mojave monitors the incoming audio stream and generates grain when the audio reaches a predetermined threshold.
  • Chisel:
    LED Color: Gold
Mojave only generates grain from the Gen button and gate inputs, all other generation sources are disabled.

Relationship between Rate and Clock Mode

DefaultFree ClockIn , Rate transitions smoothly from slow grain triggers to audio rate triggers. For quantized rate control with divide/multiply, set the clock mode toQuantized Clockmode. This allows Rate to act as a Div/Mult control for internal or external clocks. The list of divisions/multipliers available in Quantized Clock mode is shown in the image below.

Control details

distribute

  • Free Clock Mode: When the knob is turned to its minimum counterclockwise position, no additional rhythmic variation occurs and the grain plays normally.Turning the knob clockwise increases the rate at which the grains begin to deviate from the expected grain velocity. When the knob reaches its maximum value, grains are triggered 100% randomly off the grain speed, creating a beautifully chaotic texture.
  • Quantized Clocked Mode: Using Distribute in this clock mode instead increases the possibility of quantized rhythmic changes in grain speed. You can expect rests, ratchets, and pulsating patterns to come out of this knob.

Structure

  • Knob Position: 0%
    No random pitch modulation applied.
  • Knob Position: 1%-33%
A semitone pitch shift for each grain.Great for creating walls of fast grain or turning sawtooth waves into giant supersaws.
  • Knob Position: 33%-45%
An octave is introduced in addition to a semitone pitch shift.
  • Knob Position: 45%-55%
Only octave pitch shift is applied.
  • Knob Position: 55%-65%
All notes within the melody range are available, determined by the selected sky mode.
  • Knob Position: 65%-100%
Melodic events such as arpeggios and trills are introduced, increasing frequency throughout the range.

Drift

  • Free Clock Mode: Drift randomly generates grains across the buffer, increasing the maximum distance from the Zone knob's position as you turn the knob clockwise.
  • Quantized Clocked Mode: Drift randomly jumps around the audio buffer at quantized positions (quarter notes, whole notes, eighth notes, etc.).

The position of the grain controlled by Drift and Zone is indicated by a white LED on the wind LED.

Dune,

Mojave generates various modulation sources via the Dune output.

  • Distribute: Controls the amount of stepped modulation. At the minimum value, the modulation is smooth; as you increase the value, the modulation becomes more gradual, increasing the step length.
  • Drift: Controls the direction of modulation. The default is a rising ramp waveform.Increasing the value increases the probability of switching to a falling ramp waveform. When Dune is in a descending ramp shape, set the knob to the minimum value to fix the ramp direction.
  • Whirl: Controls the modulation speed. When the knob is at its minimum value, the Dune output produces the slowest signal, and at its maximum value it is the fastest signal.

Sky Mode

Change Mojave's quantize mode between four configurable options. These quantizations affect the Structure and Zone knobs, as well as rhythmic components throughout Mojave.

Default Sky Modes

  • dawn:
    LED Color: Blue
    Quantization: Major scale
  • Day:
    LED Color: Green
    Quantization: Minor scale
  • Dusk:
    LED Color: Gold
    Quantization: Chromatic scale
  • Twilight:
    LED Color: Purple
Quantization: No quantization for pitch or rhythm.

Sky Mode LEDs: In each sky mode, not only the button color but also the wind LED color changes.

The quantize settings for each mode areNarwhal WebCan be configured individually using the app.Possible values include:

  • major
  • minor
  • major pentatonic
  • minor pentatonic
  • chromatic
  • harmonic minor
  • whole tone
  • No quantization

Secondary functions via button combinations

  • Input level - Clock Mode + Input Level
Clock Mode buttonWhile holding downMix knobAdjust the audio input level (both input jack and microphone) by operating the .Set to maximum when using line level signals.
  • LED brightness - Clock Mode + Gust
Clock Mode buttonWhile holding downGust knobYou can adjust the brightness of the LED by operating .
  • Reset input level - Clock Mode + Freeze
Clock Mode buttonWhile holding downFreeze buttonYou can instantly reset the input level to default by pressing .
  • Microphone settings - Clock Mode + Lock
