VCNO is a noise oscillator that can generate full spectrum white noise and a wide variety of random signals. VCNO isPitch can be modulated with CV, allowing outputs with different acoustic characteristics to be used simultaneously. It can be patched into a VCA and used as a sound source, or as a trigger or modulation source for other elements of a modular system.
The main difference between a typical Eurorack fixed noise generator and a VCNO is how the noise is generated.Instead of using a fixed white noise generator as a noise source, the VCNO uses a variable frequency linear feedback shift register (LFSR) to create a pseudo-random sequence of bits (square waves). When these occur at frequencies significantly higher than the audio spectrum, the resulting sound that reaches us becomes full-spectrum white noise.Although this method of generating noise is technically digital (like the C64's SID sound source chip), VCNO uses discrete analog hardware instead of a digital microcontroller. Implemented.
Demo videoNow you can use an oscilloscope to see how a random pattern of square waves is interpreted by the human ear as pure white noise.
