MUSICAL FEATURES

A versatile percussion module based on the architecture of the TR-909's snare and kick circuits, aimed at producing multiple forms of analog percussion as well as a variety of other effects. Like other Mutant Drums, the machine is rooted in classic analog percussion synthesis. It can create alien-like sounds, but also provide classic 909 house snares and kicks if needed. The machine does not contain a microcontroller, and all signals and waveforms are generated by separate components and ICs. This results in a distinctly analog sound and user experience.

Analog percussion synthesis engine without microcontroller:

  • A unique inverter core oscillator forms MEMBRANE. Each analog oscillator has three selectable waveforms.
  •  Synthesize a variety of sounds, from heavy bass drums to classic 909-style snares and other complex tones.
  •  The modular design makes the machine a versatile auxiliary, making it suitable not only for percussion but also for various types of modular sound design.
  • The SNAPPY section consists of a voltage-controlled noise oscillator for modeling the noise part of a drum's timbre.
  • Both MEMBRANE and SNAPPY elements have external inputs to replace the built-in sound source, opening up many possibilities
  • 13 control voltages and audio inputs for a fully modular drum experience
  • 7 audio and CV/gate outputs for maximum integration with other modules
  • Dedicated outputs for each WAVE and NOISE oscillator allow the machine to be used as a complex VCO in your system when not synthesizing percussion

Generate complex tones from analog waveforms with waveform scanning:

  • MEMBRANE waveforms can be scanned automatically by wavescanner's voltage-controlled clock generator, or you can also use an external clock or VCO
  • SCAN FREQ CV forms a unique tonal control that makes the machine behave like a complex oscillator on the WAVES output
  • ENABLE input allows wavescanner to be switched on/off with CV or gate signal

How To Use

Mutant Machine is a dynamic analog instrument that can generate a wide palette of tones, from a variety of analog percussion to complex drones and vibrations. In order to achieve such a variety of tones, the Machine hasMEMBRANESNAPPYare synthesized in two synthesis sections and the final output. The MEMBRANE and SNAPPY circuits are based on classic analog percussion techniques and reimagined from the ground up for 2st century modular synthesis.

Membrane uses two analog VCOs to form the main body of the sound, while the SNAPPY section adds noise elements to further change the timbre. The noisy CLICK that occurs at the beginning of the SNAPPY sound can be adjusted in volume independently of the main decaying SNAPPY texture.

The waveforms that make up the Membrane can be selected manually with a button press, orWAVESCANNERYou can also use to automatically scan for available analog waveforms. By modulating the frequency at which the waveform is scanned, unique and complex sounds are created. SCAN FREQ is like a complex oscillator timbre control.

The Machine has eight CV and gate inputs for modulation, and two for bringing other modules into the Machine's unique synthesis core.external audio input.many audio outputsare available, offering maximum flexibility for using drone and alien tones in other parts of your modular analog system.

Membrane structure

MEMBRANE forms the main body of the sound through two analog oscillators. There are three waveforms to choose from for each oscillator.

  • Analog waveforms can be selected manually by button press. You can also use WAVESCANNER to automatically scan available waveforms. By modulating how often the waveform is scanned, complex tones are created.
  • The scanner can be CV or gated on/off via the ENABLE input.
  • If a signal is patched to WAVE 1's audio input, an external audio source may replace WAVE 1 in the signal path.

Structure of Snappy

The SNAPPY generator features a voltage-controlled noise oscillator reminiscent of vintage 8-bit computers. Small changes in pitch can result in dramatic changes to the overall sound produced by this unique oscillator.

  • This section adds a decaying noise element to the mix to complement MEMBRANE. Attenuation can be controlled by voltage.
  • The CLICK generator is derived from the same sound source as SNAPPY, but its volume is adjusted independently.
  • If you get tired of the built-in noise generator, you can route external audio by plugging it into the SNAPPY IN
