uGrids are Mutable Instruments
GridsA compact clone module and 3-channel trigger pattern generator. All patterns are determined by specifying a common base pattern for the three channels using Map X and Map Y, and specifying Fill for each channel (CH3 to CH1 knobs). Map X, Map Y, fill of each channel can be CV.You can also control the randomness or swing of the pattern with the Chaos input.Patterns 3, 1, and 2 of each channel are assumed to be BD, SD, and HH patterns, respectively, but of course they can also be used as other patterns.
Optional settings
With all CV inputs unpatched, press and hold the TAP/RESET button until the button LED lights up and you enter uGrids option setting mode. Once you're done setting up, press and hold the button again.
Clock Resolution
The clock resolution is set with the E1CH1 knob.
- Three LEDs indicate the current setting (4, 8, 24ppqn from the left).
Tap Tempo and Reset
The Tap Tempo/Beat Indicator button can be configured as a Reset button, and you can switch between these two modes by turning the CH2 knob.
3 LEDs off: Tap to reset to the beginning of the pattern
- 3 LEDs lit: Tap to set tempo
swing
Turning the CH3 knob enables or disables swing for the internal clock. When enabled, the swing amount is set by the CHAOS knob and affects only the internal clock.
All three LEDs off: Swing is disabled. CHAOS knob acts as a random control.
3 LEDs lit: Internal clock swing is active. The CHAOS knob controls the amount.
It cannot swing with the clock signal received at the CLOCK input, and it cannot swing in Euclidean Sequencer mode.
Euclidean sequencer mode
Turning the X knob switches between Euclidean sequencer mode and grid-specific pattern generation mode.
3 LEDs off: Euclidean sequencer mode enabled
3 LEDs lit: Euclidean sequencer mode disabled
In Euclidean Sequencer mode, the MAP X and MAP YCHAOS knobs control the cycle length/size of the pattern on channels 1, 2 and 3 respectively, while the CH1, CH2 and CH3 knobs control the number of fill triggers. The ACC output outputs the first note of the pattern, i.e. a trigger each time the pattern completes a cycle.
Trigger/Gate Output
By default uGrids generates a trigger signal (a short 1ms pulse), but you can change it to output a gate signal suitable for controlling the CV input of an envelope or other module. Turn the Y knob to change the trigger/gate output.
・3 LEDs off: The output is a trigger.
・3 LEDs lit: Output is gate.
Alternate Output Layouts
The three ACCENT outputs are normally ACC1/ACC2/ACC3, but can be changed to ACC/CLK/RST. ACC is the global accent output and goes high when ACC1, ACC2, or ACC3 goes high. CLK is the clock output (either mirroring the clock input or using one of the internal clock signals), and RST is the reset trigger output. Turn the CHAOS knob to switch outputs.
・3 LEDs off: ACC1/ACC2/ACC 3
- 3 LEDs: ACC/CLK/RST
