MUSICAL FEATURES

Algo is a stereo 4-operator FM synth engine with a menu-free interface that allows direct manipulation of complex waveforms, cross-modulation, and additive synthesis. Four oscillators give you the flexibility to create classic to adventurous FM tones, configurable in both series and parallel.

There are no menus and a simple, easy-to-understand LED display makes it easy to understand the algorithms, so you can create sonorous bells, complex folds, and luxuriously detuned drones as you patch. . Each oscillator in Algo has dedicated controls for frequency and level, as well as CV inputs, and add some envelopes for a full FM voice.

After setting up the oscillator, Algo gives you the option to further sculpt the timbre. carrier, modulator, or bothwave warpingto transform a simple sine wave into a buzzing pulse or somewhere in between. Wavewarp can be applied to carrier, modulator, or both types of oscillators.wave foldingThe three modes add classic and creative harmonic content to your tone. Oscillator with global spread controldetuneperfect for creating eerie, aggressive cacophony. Finally, to add rich thickness,Stereo chorusadds a final sparkly touch to your sound.

The output is stereo mini, and using the included cable it is possible to break out from stereo mini to 3.5mm dual mono.

How To Use

FM and algorithms

The four oscillators (operators) on Algo are used to modulate (FM) the frequencies of other oscillators.modulator, or output the sound itselfCareersused as either. Which role will you act in?algorithmThe content of the algorithm is indicated by the shape of the LED line connecting each oscillator. For example, Algorithm 5 is displayed as shown below, but this is an algorithm that modulates OSC1 and OSC2 with a signal that is a mixture of OSC3 and OSC4. OSC1 and OSC2 act as modulators, and you can hear the mixed sound of carriers OSC3 and OSC4.You can switch between nine algorithms by pressing the red ALGO button.

The four larger knobs arranged diagonally control each oscillator.frequencyand the corresponding small knob (pot) for each oscillator.volumeDetermine. The volume of each oscillator is used to control not only the volume when listening as a carrier, but also the strength of the modulation from that OSC when acting as a modulator. If you want to control the overall FM strength,XM (cross modulation)Controlled by knob or CV. This works similarly to the FM Index.

ALGO first has a base frequency that is controlled by the 1V/Oct pitch CV, Tune knob, and black Range button (octave switching), and each oscillator's frequency is set as a ratio to that base frequency. In FM, when the carrier and modulator frequencies are in an integer ratio, only a timbre change can occur without creating dissonance, so the four frequency knobs are adjusted to 4/1, 2, and 1 times the base frequency to maintain this relationship. It changes from 2x to 18x.

If you want to make it dissonant, shift the frequency to a non-integer. You can create such a shift by raising the detune (DT) knob, or you can fine-tune each oscillator to a frequency that deviates from the integer ratio by holding down the red ALGO button and turning the frequency knob. Furthermore, if you turn the frequency knob while pressing the black RANGE button, it will enter FIXED mode, and the knob will change the frequency continuously without being affected by the main 1V/Oct. To return to normal mode from fine tune mode or fixed mode, turn the frequency knob while holding down both the RANGE and ALGO buttons.

Waveform control and chorus effect

ALGO'sWARP and FOLD controls are provided to add even more tonal variety.

WARPmorphs the oscillator waveform from sine wave to triangle wave to sawtooth wave to square wave. In addition, by holding down the ALGO button and turning the knob, you can select the oscillator whose waveform will be changed from only the modulator, only the carrier, or all OSCs. When patched to WARP CV, the WARP knob becomes an attenuator for CV.

FOLDperforms folding, which folds back the oscillator waveform. You can also select the folding method from symmetrical, asymmetrical, and soft clip type by pressing the ALGO button and turning the knob. When patched to FOLD CV, the FOLD knob becomes an attenuator for CV.

ALGO hasChorus effectis installed. To enable, press and hold the ALGO button and turn the DT knob to enable and adjust the strength. When chorus is enabled, the LED next to the DT knob will light green.

Assignable CV input

In ALGO's CV input,FM/DTwith JackM1-4Jack is assignable. With the FM/DT jack, each time you plug or unplug a jack while holding down the ALGO button, the jack will switch from FM CV input to detune CV input to oscillator sync input. By default, M1-4 becomes the volume CV input of the corresponding oscillator, but if you insert or remove it from the jack while holding down the ALGO button, it becomes the frequency CV input of the corresponding oscillator. The frequency CV input operates so that when the oscillator is in a mode that takes an integer ratio frequency, the CV also selects one of the integer ratio frequencies. When fine-tuning or in FIXED mode, the frequency CV input operates as a continuous 1V/Oct input.

panning control

Panning is possible when using the stereo output. Control the pan position by holding down the ALGO button and turning the level knob.

Global VCA

By holding down the black RANGE button and patching it to the M4 jack, you can use the M4 jack as the VCA's CV input for the main output. If you patch the envelope, it will function as a synth voice.

Firmware update

Here are the steps:

  1. Power on the module
  2. Press and hold the 'firmware' button on the back and press the 'reset' button once
  3. Release the 'firmware' button
  4. Connect the USB B cable from the module to your computer. Please connect directly without using a USB hub
  5. You should see a USB disk named "RPI-RP2" on your computer. Drag the firmware UF2 file there
  6. If successful, the module will reboot with the new firmware
