MUSICAL FEATURES
The Future Sound Systems FIL3 is an improved version of the acclaimed FIL2 Spectral Devastator, featuring a combination of high-pass and low-pass filters with a unique character. The Spectral Devastator was designed from basic principles by Finlay Shakespeare in 2011-2012 as he explored new ways of controlling the voltages in filter circuits. Whereas the FIL2 always imbued the input signal with power, the FIL3 allows for much more control over the behavior of both filter sections.
The first new feature added is the "Colour control". This feature was added to externally control the resonance of each filter. The oscillation of each filter can now be controlled with the Colour parameter, and by adding further nonlinearity, it widens the range of tones available per filter.
Secondly, a "Blast switch" has been added to each filter. This control attempts to linearize the filter core, while also allowing for more resonance. Similar to the Colour parameter, the Blast switch expands the tonal spectrum of the two filters, allowing for greater flexibility. Each filter also now has Input Drive and Output Level controls, giving the user more control over signal levels, which can sometimes be unpredictable when using the filters. Increasing Drive saturates the filter core, allowing the input signal to "overwhelm" the filter.
In addition, it also features a "normalling switch" inherited from the FIL2, which allows for easy and quick patching of the high-pass and low-pass filters in series or parallel.
Each filter's cutoff CV depth now features an attenuverter, expanding the modulation possibilities, and the manual cutoff control has also been improved, offering a wider control range compared to FIL2, while FIL3 retains its power.
