New Systems Instruments Inertia is a rare type of universal movement simulator for Eurorack that produces an output curve from the forces of excitation and its own movement. Inspired by the Serge DUSG, this unit creates a musically sophisticated feature set from simple controls.A unique swiss army knife module that works in both audio and CV ranges.

HOW TO USE

Inertia delivers a complex feature set with simple controls.The exponential speed of the output signal rise and fall voltage is set with the RISE and FALL controls. Inertia follows the input signal according to these two speeds and produces first and second order outputs. In addition to RISE/FALL mode, Inertia can also be set to VALUE/SKEW mode.In this mode, these same parameters are used to determine the overall frequency (FREQ.) and rise and fall rate bias (SKEW), as well as the overall momentum (MOMENT.) and rise and fall momentum bias (SKEW). • Attack-Release envelope: Set the INTERFACE switch to Rise/Fall mode and the RANGE switch to L to squeeze out the FALL momentum.Feed the trigger or gate signal into the TRIG input and take the envelope signal out of the 1 ORDER output. RISE rate controls the envelope attack, FALL rate controls the release. RISE momentum affects signal level and attack shape. 2 The ORDER output provides a useful envelope that differs from the classical one.
• Attack-Release-Sustain-Release envelope: Set INTERFACE to Rise/Fall mode and RANGE to L to squeeze out FALL momentum. Apply the gate to the INPUT and take the signal from the 1 ORDER output. RISE rate controls the envelope attack and FALL rate the release.The envelope sustain and release levels are set by the incoming gate signal. Attack and Sustain can be set to different levels, as RISE momentum causes the Attack to rise above the Sustain level before returning to this level at the rate of release. The RISE momentum CV input can be used for accents.  2 The ORDER output provides a useful envelope that differs from the classical one.
  
• LFOs: Set INTERFACE to Skew mode, RANGE to L, SKEW momentum to 12 o'clock, MOMENT.The output signal is taken from 1 ORDER. You can control the frequency of the LFO with the FREQ. knob, and the slope of the waveform with SKEW. 2 The ORDER output provides a second LFO that is 45 degrees out of phase.
• VCOs: Set INTERFACE to Skew mode, RANGE to H, and input CV for pitch control to V/O. Set the SKEW momentum to the 12 o'clock position and MOMENT. to the maximum value all the way to the right.Output is taken from either 1 ORDER or 2 ORDER. Use FREQ. to control the frequency of the VCO, and SKEW to control the slope of the waveform.At the knob's center position, the Inertia produces a sine wave, and by turning it left or right, the Inertia produces harmonically rich waveforms like sawtooth waves.
• Resonant low-pass filter: Set INTERFACE to Skew mode and RANGE to H. Input an audio signal to INPUT and take out the output from 2 ORDER. Use FREQ. to control the filter cutoff frequency, and MOMENT. to control the resonance of the filter. Rate SKEW sets different cutoffs for the rising and falling portions of the waveform, altering the waveform of the resonance as well as making the cutoff frequency dependent on the incoming waveform. Momentum SKEW limits resonance in a way that depends on the incoming waveform. For complex input signals, such as the output of a Harmonic Shift Oscillator, such waveform dependent filtering produces an extremely rich and evolving output signal.
