The BF2144 is a compact module that combines an SSI2144-based LPF with a special envelope generator (EG) and VCA. Because it has a built-in EG and VCA, you can use it as easily as a low-pass gate module by simply inputting a gate signal into the GATE jack.
This module is self-oscillating, so it can be used as a sine wave oscillator. Therefore, if you turn on the VCA while it is in self-oscillation mode, you can easily output a kick drum sound by simply inputting a gate signal.
The FM knob acts as an attenuverter. The signal input from the FM jack is adjusted by the FM knob, and then modulates the cutoff frequency. The ENV output is also internally connected to the FM jack (the internal connection is cut off when patching to the FM jack).
The VCF output contains a soft clip circuit, which reduces volume balance differences when changing the Q and provides a saturation effect when the Q is small.
The ENV output is wired to the internal VCA. The VCA ON/OFF switch allows you to select whether or not to pass the VCA after the VCF. The VCA is a discrete transistor design, which results in asymmetrical distortion. This adds a vintage synth-like feel to the tone.
The EG is a DSR envelope. A single Env knob changes the decay time, sustain level, and release time in unison. The higher the Env value, the greater each parameter increases simultaneously. If a short pulse signal is input as the gate signal, it behaves like a simple decay envelope. If a long gate signal is input, a natural envelope is obtained, just like when a string is plucked. Another unique behavior is that if the gate is ON continuously, the Env output level increases slightly. This can be used to add accents to synth phrases.
